My collection of Pie Birds. What is a Pie Bird??? Pie Birds or Pie Vents were used in baking pies to prevent the pie from boiling over in the oven by allowing the steam created when the fruit filling or other contents are cooking to escape from inside the pie. They also supported the pastry crust in the center of the pie, so that it did not sag in the middle. Many of these Pie Vents have been made by my sister and myself. My husband has also been known to paint a Pie Bird or two. We use to sell them at the Kansas City Market a few years ago, and believe me I can paint a Pie Bird in my sleep! Every time we are in the Flea Markets I look for Pie Birds. My DH is as bad as I am about looking for them. I didn't even know what they were when my sister talked me into painting them now I can't stop looking for them.

Great collection of pie birds! I really love the blue jay. I have just created a page called A Pie Bird Is An Unusual Gift and Collector's Item. The pie birds have flocked to it. I've just discovered these great pie tools...I had no idea they came in so many styles!
Hi,
I collect pie birds too and there will be a Pie Bird Convention the end of June 2010 at the Mohican state lodge in Ohio. Linda Fields who wrote 4 and 20 piebirds ( a catalog of pie birds) held the convention every other year in Paris, TN and now it will be in Ohio.Pie birds are a small fun colletable and they are fun to bake with now and then too.
Hi,
I have just bought 2 pie birds signed M. Wright on the inside and I can not find any info on the internet about who makes these, who the artist is, and their value? Anyone know anything about M. Wright? Thank you!
I'd be interested in knowing whether M. Wright worked for a noted manufacturer or is a free-lancer. The work looks professional! Ta rita in NZ
